Ranchi, Oct 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) The death of a first-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Ranchi triggered widespread uproar on the campus, with students demonstrating against alleged administration lapses and delayed emergency medical assistance.
The students created a major commotion at the IIIT hostel, located in Ranchi's Khelgaon, prompting the administration to call the police to bring the situation under control.
The agitated students staged a protest demanding improvements to hostel facilities and the resignation of the Institute's Director, Rajiv Srivastava.
The students also blocked the Khelgaon-Tatisilwai road, causing long queues of vehicles on both sides. Police and institute officials were engaged in efforts to pacify the agitating students.
The deceased student was identified as Aditya, a resident of Naugachia in Bihar's Bhagalpur district. He was found hanging in his hostel room on Saturday night.
He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Since the incident, students have been alleging a lack of basic amenities in the hostel and the unavailability of timely medical assistance during emergencies.
Blaming the Institute's director for the hostel's poor management, they are demanding his resignation.
Amidst the protest, Director Rajiv Srivastava also attempted to speak to the students to mollify them, but it only intensified their anger and agitation.
Speaking to the press on the student’s demise, Ranchi SSP Rakesh Ranjan said that preliminary investigation was underway.
“A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has collected evidence from the scene, and the student's roommate has also given a statement,” he said while adding they were looking into all possible causes of untimely death.
Institute Director said that Aditya had enrolled in the first year in August and was currently appearing for his mid-semester examinations.
According to him, the power had gone out during the night, and it was then that the student allegedly locked his room from the inside. Classmates opened the door and brought him out. The Director stated that the student was taken to the hospital in an ambulance available on the campus, where he was declared dead. He added that the need for any corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future would be reviewed.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the incident, ordering an investigation into alleged administrative negligence.
Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the NHRC, stated on social media that the Commission is taking cognisance of the student's death. He called for a probe into the delay in medical treatment, potential administrative negligence, and the circumstances surrounding the death.
